Helen M. (Kerr) Thomas

Mrs. Helen M. Thomas, 83, of Canton and formerly of Russell passed away peacefully, while in the company of family at the United Helpers Maplewood Nursing Home on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, where she has been a resident since 2011.

Helen was born, January 13, 1934 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of Edwin and Ada (Perry) Kerr. She attended the Red Mills Country School and OFA. Helen was a nurse aid at the St. Lawrence Psych Center and for St. Joseph’s Nursing Home and was a ward clerk at Hepburn Hospital, retiring in 1980. On August 14, 1954 Helen married Fred Thomas at the White Church in Lisbon with Rev. William Smithers, officiating. Fred predeceased her on March 10, 1989. In 2001, Helen moved to Russell where she resided until she moved to Maplewood.

Helen was a member of the Russell Senior Citizens, past member of St. Lawrence County Senior Citizens, Lisbon 89 er’s, Seaway Valley and Hermon DeKalb Senior Citizens and was an honorary member of the St. Lawrence County Marine Corp League.

Helen enjoyed sewing, knitting, puzzles, playing cards, bingo and spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren.

Helen is survived by a son Darry (Jane) Thomas of Mechanicville; a daughter Kimberly (Jeff) Taylor of Madrid; a brother Robert (Alice) Kerr of Waddington and by 14 grand, 20 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson; an aunt Irene Spearance and several nieces and nephews.

A sister, Juanita Harper predeceased her.

Calling hours for Helen will be held on Friday, April 14, 2017 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in the White Church Cemetery, Lisbon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Maplewood Activities Fund or to the Canton Volunteer Rescue Squad.
