William Westerdick Obituary

William Westerdick, 90, of Canton died on Monday, September 16, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse where he had been a patient for a brief stay.

Born October 10, 1928 in Potsdam, he was the son of the late Frank and Ruth (Dunning) Westerdick. He attended Potsdam Schools and left to serve in the US ARMY during the Korean War as a Corporal from 1948-1952. Upon his return, he worked for $1/hour in a hayfield so he could take Delores out on a date. In January of 1953, Bill married the only women he ever loved, Delores Perry. She predeceased him in September of 1984, and even though she passed at a young age, Delores’s family continued to include Bill as family in every way. From 1955 until his retirement in 1986, Bill worked for the New York State Department of Transportation, from which he retired at the age of 58, leaving him many years to make his rounds and pester anyone he wanted, some of which, he poked with a cane, once he got used to carrying it.

Bill is survived by his two children, Ronald Westerdick and Kelly (Malcolm) Webster; five grandchildren, Tara Dobbins (Christopher Brehl); Chelsea Marie (James) Nevadomski; Nicole Krishna-Hill; Matthew (Maureen) Webster and Desiree (Dave) Roberts; seven great-grandchildren, Lilli, Cian, Easton, Jace, Lydia, Noah and Bryce as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his beloved Delores and his parents, Bill is predeceased by all his siblings, Mary Ramsay, Carrie Sharlow, Florence Burgess, Annie Hatch, Rose Perrault, John and Robert Westerdick and George Westerdick, who died in infancy.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton, where a closing prayer will be held at 2:00 followed by a graveside service in the Beech Plains Cemetery.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project; P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or online at support.woundedwarriorproject.org.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the crew at Monroe Muffler in Canton for their kindness and friendship to Bill over the last few years as well as to the morning crew at the Canton Burger King, where he would go to get his morning cup of tea or coffee.
