Jonathan Christian "Chris" Oakes

Jonathan Christian “Chris” Oakes, 21, of Canton passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital as a result of respiratory failure due to Covid 19. He was in the company of family.

Chris as he was known to most, was born May 3, 2002 in Potsdam, a son of Joy Thompson and the late Todd Oakes. He was a 2020 graduate Canton High School and later graduated from SUNY Canton where he was proud to be on the Presidents List for each semester. Chris was truly one of a kind, a Unicorn of sorts, he was a wealth of knowledge and loved to share facts of all kinds. He had a knack for gaming, enjoyed reading, computers, cookouts with family and walking around. He loved his grandparents, Halloween and Comicon. Chris’s sense of humor would often leave you scratching your head, but would certainly leave you smiling. He enjoyed the fact he was double jointed and could turn his foot around backward.

He is survived by Joy Thompson, Sandy and Carrie Bascom, several siblings, grandparents, cousins and friends.

Calling hours for Chris will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 6:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at the VFW Post 1231, Gouverneur Street, Canton.
