Mrs. Dorothy A. Briggs, 91, formerly of Canton died peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2019 in Lakeland, Florida, at the home of her daughter Helen, where she was in the company of family.
Dorothy was born January 24, 1928 in Plattsburgh, New York; the daughter of the late Joseph and Marguerite (Amlaw) Manor. Dorothy attended school in Old DeKalb and Ogdensburg City Schools and Canton High School. On December 10, 1945, she married John Briggs at St. Mary’s Church in Canton with Rev. John O’Brien, officiating. Dorothy worked for Sheffield’s Milk Plant in Canton and Dunn’s Grocery in Colton. Later. She became a mother and homemaker, raising two sons and four daughters. Dorothy resided in Canton until 2000 when she relocated to Lakeland, Florida, where she was a member of the local YMCA and then moved to Mulberry.
Dorothy is survived by two sons, John Briggs and Joseph (Alberta) Briggs and three daughters, Vickie (Henry) Perrin; Sue Briggs and Helen Dunn, numerous grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren and very close friends Clay Jobe and Keith (Pop) Noble.
She is predeceased by her husband John, Step-Father Jay Halladay, a daughter, Elizabeth Pickett, Son-in-Law, Tom Dunn and sisters, Mae Fitch and Rita Russell.
There will be a calling hour from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Crary Mills Presbyterian Church followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm at the church provided by Pastor Philip ‘Skip’ Edie. Burial will follow in the Crary Mills Cemetery.
