William J. Whalen 70, of Massena, passed peacefully on Sunday June 29th, 2025 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
William (Bill) was born August 9th, 1954 in Massena, the eldest son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Carraher) Whalen. After high school he traveled out west with friends and his guitar to pursue his goal of joining a band. He met his former wife Deborah Schwartz at an audition in Denver, CO in 1974, the couple married in 1975. Returning to the North Country they formed a number of bands, Kathexis, Whalen, Whalen, and Harvey, Ninety Nine; and then as a duo, Take Two. They performed together for 25 years throughout the North Country and New England in many public and private venues.
Bill was also employed at Massena Electric Department, Reynolds, and Alcoa.
Bill earned a reputation as a great guitar player and loved playing guitar, writing, and recording music.
He is survived by two sons, Ian and Michael Whalen, his former wife Deborah Boprey, his mother Elizabeth Whalen, a brother John Whalen, a sister Mary Louise Williams, (her husband Ted) and two nieces, Maureen Kania, (husband Tom), and Margaret Williams.
Per his request, there will be no calling hours or service. A burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Canton will take place at a later date.
