Thomas A. Owney, 63, of Potsdam died on Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, where he was in the company of family.
Tom was born March 28, 1963 in Bronx, New York and raised in Queens, a son of the late Arthur and Alice McGlaughlin. Following high school graduation, Tom served proudly in the United States Navy and graduated from Clarkson University with a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. On August 2, 1996, Tom married Erin Butler.
Tom worked for Perras Construction, several years for Burley-Guminiak & Associates of Canton and retired from the St. Lawrence Seaway as supervisor in 2025. He then started his own firm, TTVWS. Tom enjoyed golf, hunting and just being outdoors. He cherished time with family and being at “The Property”. He also had a special relationship with his son Sean’s dog, Atlas, who he said was the only one who ever loved him, while wearing his signature smirk.
Tom is survived by his wife of 30 years, Erin, three children, Sean Owney (Tasia Fetterley), Bridget (Nick) Dimond and Brendan Owney (Haeun Lee); siblings Michael (Maria) Owney, Tim (Beth) Owney, Donna (Kenny) Levinson, and Christopher (Evie) Owney and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours for Tom will be held on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and again on Wednesday, September 2, 2026 from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton.
