Mass of Christian Burial for Stuart C. Papaw, 76, NYS Police, Retired, of Canton will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at 11:00 AM, at St. Mary's Church, with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Stuart died on Sunday, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; Canton from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Stuart is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia "Judy" Papaw of Canton; a son, Stuart Papaw and wife Tammy of Tampa, FL and a daughter, Deborah Tagliarino and husband Richard of Cheektowaga, NY and by a granddaughter Samantha.
A brother, Courtland Papaw and a sister, Vivian Perkins Myers, predecease him.
Stuart Charles Papaw, born June 2, 1937, in Canton, was the son of the late, Courtland C. and Rosella (LaRose) Papaw. He graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School in 1956. On March 11, 1961, Stuart married Virginia "Judy" Barr at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Msgr. J.A. O'Brien, celebrating. Stuart was a NYS Trooper, retiring in 1991 as Station Commander of the Gouverneur Barracks. Prior to becoming a Trooper, Stuart was a mechanic for Bell's Garage and was a self-employed contractor.
Stuart was a past member of the US ARMY Reserves Unit of Canton and an Associate Member of the Canton VFW Post 1231 and a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He enjoyed woodworking, bicycling and gardening.
