Stanley E. Peabody, 86, Hermon, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Clifton-Fine Hospital, Star Lake, where he had been a patient for 2 weeks.
Stanley was born June 10, 1925 in Pitcairn, the son of the late Harvey and Ida Peabody, he attended Hermon Schools. Stanley served in the US Navy, including time in Guam; he received an honorable discharge in 1946. He married Helen M. Ferguson December 21, 1947 at the First United Methodist Church in Schenectady, where they lived for a short period of time, then to Hermon; then to Star Lake where they spent most of their married life, returning to Hermon in 1995. Mrs. Peabody predeceased him May 5, 2005, after 57 years of marriage.
Stanley worked for J&L Steel in Star Lake and joined the Operating Engineers (local 545) in January 1957 as a drag line and crane operator until his retirement in January 1987. In 2007 he received his 50 year watch, and a lifetime membership, which he was extremely proud of. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW.
He enjoyed years of trapping, fishing, hunting and trading of stories with family and friends.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law; Lloyd R. Peabody and Debbie Bice of Hermon; a daughter Elaine J. Hance of Canton; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Stan is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law; Burton and Dorothy Peabody of Russell and several nieces and nephews.
Stanley was predeceased by a brother Donald H. Peabody and by a sister Hazel Burtis.
In accordance with his wishes there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be scheduled later at the convenience of the family. He will be missed by all of his family and friends.
