Calling hours for Stanley W. Cohen, 80, of Canton, will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the O'Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; from 1:00 – 5:00 PM. Stanley passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2015 while at home.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosalyn of Canton; by a son, Hal Cohen and wife Barbara; by three daughters, Laureen Cohen; Carrie Cohen and Amy Vangelov and husband John, all of Syracuse. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Stephanie, Allison, Brittany and Jessica Cohen, Cameron and Hunter Cohen-Ciampichini, and Sophia, Olivia and Elliana Vangelov and by a sister Helen Slutsky and husband Herb.
He is predeceased by a sister Barbara Saxe.
Stanley was born, January 20, 1935 in Mount Vernon, NY, the son of the late Benjamin and Sarah (Freidman) Cohen. He graduated from Cortland High School in 1952 and from Hobart College in 1956 where he was co-captain of the men's basketball team. He married Rosalyn Senkulics in 1956. In 1957, the couple moved to Canton where Stanley began teaching Physical Education and Accounting at Canton ATC. Stanley also began his career coaching basketball that year as well, and was the coach for Canton ATC men's basketball team from 1957-1973. From 1973 until this year, he was the assistant coach for the SUNY Potsdam Bears men's basketball team. Stanley is associated with over 1000 wins as coach or assistant coach.
Stanley was a kind hearted man, who loved people, his wife, children and grandchildren first and foremost. He loved to tell stories, play the piano and he had a great sense of humor and was always smiling. He always had a kind word for everyone he met. In 2011 he was inducted in to the SUNY Canton Hall of Fame for his years of dedication and service to SUNY Canton and for inspiring the alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. Most recently in 2014 Stanley was inducted to the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame.
He loved Canton and all of the townspeople, he enjoyed following SU sports, the Potsdam Bears Basketball team and the NY Yankees.
