Smith was born in Plattsburgh, NY and grew up in Massena, NY. He attended Massena High School where he was a standout hockey player. After marrying his wife in 1960, Smith moved to Rochester, NY. It is there that he would raise a family of four and work for the Eastman Kodak Company for nearly 32 years before taking an early retirement in 1992.

He loved sports and continued to play hockey, softball, golf, and referee hockey. There were many memorable times spent on camping and skiing trips with the family and watching his sons play hockey.

Following his retirement, Smith and Nancy returned to the North Country where they built a beautiful home and enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature and time spent with their many Higley Flow friends for more than 30 years.
