Funeral Mass for Shirley Ann (Haney) Hourihan, 90, of Canton will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s Church, Canton. Burial will follow in be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Calling hours for Shirley will be held on Friday, August 21, 2026 from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. Shirley passed on August 16, 2026 at the Rochester Regional Hospital, Potsdam.
Shirley was born July 18, 1936 in Canton, the daughter of Harvey and Dorothy (Haney) VanAtter. Following the passing of her mother just two days after her birth, Shirley was raised by her maternal grandparents John and Genevieve (Hesselgrave) Haney. She was a 1951 Graduate of Canton High School. She also attended Canton ATC.
Shirley was employed for many years at LeBerge & Curtis, Inc. and the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections, retiring in 1996. A marriage to Ellis J. Curtis Sr. ended in divorce. She married Jerry Hourihan on January 8, 1977 and was a devoted and loving Coache’s wife, never missing a game.
Shirley spent over 30 winter seasons in Rotonda West, Florida, enjoying the warm weather and the comfort of many dear friends from throughout the country she met while in the south. She loved watching the dolphins at Englewood Beach, reading, walking, traveling and daily car rides. Along with her family, Shirley’s special sheltie dogs; K.C, Bailey and Toby were closest to her heart.
Shirley is survived by her husband Jerry, her children, Darlene (Tim) O’Connor, Duane (Melinda) Curtis, Jim (Karen) Curtis, Kate (Alan) Mulkin, and Ron (Kathleen) Curtis, eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and her longtime friend Gail Jubinville. She was predeceased by her grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, her daughter-in-law Terri Curtis and her granddaughter Samantha Curtis.
A special thank you to her hairdresser, caregiver and friend Sue Planty and also to Sue Davis, the staff at United Helpers Nursing Home and Rochester Regional Hospital.
