Funeral mass for Shirley I. Elliott, 81, of Canton will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 10:00am at the St. Mary's Church, Canton with Rev. Joseph Morgan, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Henry's Cemetery, DeKalb. Shirley died on Wednesday, April 4 at home while under the care of family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home; 5821 US Hwy 11, on Wednesday, April 11, from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to the Neo Natal Unit in Watertown.
Surviving Shirley is her husband of 63 years, Gene of Canton; her children, Cheryl and husband Rodney Grant of Myrtle Beach; Debbie and husband Mark Casey of Beverly, MA; Paula and husband Robert Jones of Liverpool and Michael and wife Donna Elliott of Ogdensburg; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Shannon and Melissa Casey, Jeff and Amanda Grant, Tori and Christopher Elliott and Katherine Jones; two great-grandchildren, David and Madison. Also surviving are several brothers ; John, Jim, Francis, Richard and Gary Conklin and sisters; Beverly O'Brien, Kate Karpowich, Donna Hosley, Jean Gemmill and Theresa Fauchier.
A son Russell Elliott and granddaughter Rachel Elliott predecease her.
Shirley was born, October 10, 1930 in Potsdam, the daughter of the late John and Florence (Trombley) Conklin. She attended Canton Schools. On July 21, 1948, she married Gene Elliott at St. Mary's Church in Canton, with Fr. McCarthy, officiating. She worked at Britt's, Ames and the Canton IGA stores. Shirley enjoyed gardening, sewing, casinos, baking and fishing with her grandchildren.
