Sarah Matthews

Sarah Matthews, 48, of Canton died unexpectedly of complications following a routine medical procedure on Friday, May 15, 2020.

Sarah was born March 3, 1972 in Gouverneur, a daughter of Michael and Pat (Richardson) Matthews. She was a graduate of Morristown Central School and SUNY Empire State. On May 23, 2003, she was united by married to Gretchen Thompson.

Sarah had many wonderful attributes. She worked for over a decade in the activities department at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Ogdensburg. First as an aide then as Activities Director. She had always been an ally for those who needed a voice. Sarah was a tireless advocate for human rights, animal rights and the environment.

Those lucky enough to have had Sarah in their lives knew that there was nobody more loving and compassionate. Reading, sewing, puzzles and technology were four of her interests, with her favorite being time spent with her cherished loved ones (two-legged and four-legged), laughing and treasuring their time together.

Sarah is survived by her wife, Gretchen Thompson; parents, Michael and Pat Matthews; and siblings, Annette Bowman, Jen Matthews, Alyssa Matthews and Jeffrey Matthews.
