Robert W. Latimer, 85, of CR 27, Canton passed away on October 22, 2011 at the United Helpers Ogdensburg Nursing Home.
Robert was born October 1, 1926 in Pulaski, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Lyle S. and Helen (Brown) Latimer. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the European Theatre. Following the war, he remained in Germany in the ARMY of Occupation, returning home in 1946. He received an honorable discharge and Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy. Robert also was a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient.
In 1947, he married Mary E. Burwell. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, local 545; a member of Masonic Lodge 111 and was a life member of the Canton Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Latimer was a crane operator working on construction sites throughout the state, such as the St. Lawrence Seaway, Niagara Falls, the Newell Dome in Ogdensburg, and Plattsburgh Missile Base.
On his farm, he raised beef cattle for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and relaxing with his two cats.
Robert is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary; a daughter Susan Latimer of Madrid; two sons, Thomas E. Latimer and Montgomery Q. and wife Terry Latimer, all of Canton. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Ann Huntley and Carol Streit of Canton, three brothers, Glen of Madrid; William of Washington and Dean of New York City.
Robert is predeceased by three brothers, Alan, Ralph, and James and a daughter-in-law, Katrina Latimer.
As requested, there will be no funeral or calling hours. A memorial service and burial in Evergreen Cemetery will held at a later date.
