Funeral service for Richard F. Sheridan Sr., 88, of Canton, will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 5:30 PM at the O'Leary Funeral Home, Canton with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, officiating. Richard died on Saturday, May 7, 2016 while at home, surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Canton VFW Post 1231, 34 Gouverneur St; Canton, NY 13617 or to the Potsdam Humane Society, 17 Madrid Ave; Potsdam, NY 13676.

Richard is survived by his wife of 42 years, Candy of Canton; by his five children, Deanna Sheridan Stevenson of Canton; Jackie (Danny) LaShomb) of Norwood; Ginny Sheridan of Canton; Rob Sheridan of Canton and Richard (Candace) Sheridan Jr. Also surviving are a brother, R. Neil (Noreen) Sheridan of Canton; sister-in-law Frances Sheridan and several grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Richard is predeceased by a daughter, Cathy Sheridan-Froats, by an infant brother, William and by brother, Lawrence Sheridan and by a sister, Barbara Bice-Cota.

Richard was born February 26, 1928 in Ogdensburg, the son of the late John L. and Mildred (Johnson) Sheridan. He graduated from Canton High School in 1941. Richard served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 and in the ARMY Air Force from 1946-1949. Richard was Maintenance Supervisor for the Canton Housing Authority, retiring in 1995. Richard Married Candy Miller on April 27, 1974 in Canton.

Richard loved spending time with his grandchildren, all animals, especially his cat, "Maribell"; he was a member of the Edward C. Seymour VFW Post 1231 of Canton, he was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and his specialty was Spaghetti.
