Obituary

Reed John Whitman, was born June 10, 1961 in Ogdensburg, to Noel and Bethany Whitman of Canton. Reed graduated from Canton Central High School in 1979 and thereafter relocated to Richmond, Virginia. He worked construction, often traveling to various parts of the country.

He returned to Canton several years ago to be closer to his family and assist with the care of his parents. Reed was, without a doubt, a one-of-a-kind person who lived life on his own terms. He had a sense of humor and a way of making people laugh, then leaving them with a story to remember.

Reed was always high spirited and energetic, playing hard and living life to the fullest. Reed loved the fast-paced thrills of skiing, boating, NASCAR, and every kind of sport, especially the Boston Bruins. When Reed slowed down, he enjoyed a round of golf, music, and spending time with friends around a BBQ grill. He had a passion for cooking. He often used old family recipes and marveled in a good cookbook. He was an excellent home chef, baking pastries, smoking meats, and developing homemade sauces or dips… it was endless. The best part for him was sharing his mouth-watering creations.

Above all, Reed loved deeply. His Springer Spaniel, Nellie Mae, was his constant companion, who had a very special healing place in Reed’s heart. Reed loved his family beyond measure. Reed is survived by his sister Vickie Bregg, nieces Marya Furnia and Michelle Bush and nephew Matthew Bush, great-nieces and nephews, Alayna, Nolan and Ethan Furnia, Audrey and Christian Hammond and Mikayla and Matthew Bush, and great-great nieces and nephews Lux and Luca Perry and Jaden O’Donnell. In addition, a huge part of growing up in Canton during the 60’s and 70’s was making lasting memories with his nine crazy cousins.

From all of us, Reed-O, we will remember your laughter and antics, your loyal heart and the way you made your life your own until the very end. On October 7, 2026 at the age of 65, Reed passed away peacefully in his home, after a long private illness, with family and Nellie Mae by his side.
