Mass of Christian burial for Vivian "Peggy" Tiernan, 74, of Russell formerly of Hermon,will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 12:00pm at the St. Henry's Church in DeKalb with Rev. Douglas Lucia, celebrating. Burial will be in the Hermon Cemetery. Peggy died on Sunday, December 04, 2011 at home while surrounded by family under the care of Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home; 5821 US Hwy 11, on Tuesday, from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or the American Cancer Society.
Surviving Peggy are four sons, John "Steve" Tiernan of Russell; Thomas and Meg of Deferiet; Leo "Douglas" of Russell; and Mark of Canton; three daughters, Brenda and George Karekias of Columbus OH; Lisa and Randy Martin of Canton; and Kathleen and Dwight Dooley of Columbia, SC; 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Richard "Kate" and Linda White of Russell; Frederick White of Russell and Robert "Monk" and Debbie White of Russell; by three sisters, Janette LaBarge of Hermon; Barbara and Clifford "Stub" Woodrow of Hermon and Beverly and Eugene Williams of Saratoga.
Peggy was predeceased by a brother John White and by a granddaughter Mackenzie Tiernan.
Peggy was born on June 21, 1937 in Russell, the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Lincoln) White. She graduated from Knox-Memorial central School in 1953. She was a self employed hairdresser and she drove school bus for the Hermon DeKalb Central School for 30 years, retiring in 2007. Peggy married Leo Tiernan on July 17, 1957 in DeKalb at St. Henry's Church with Father Whitaker, officiating. Leo predeceased her in 2003.
Peggy was a member of the Hermon Fire Ladies Auxiliary, Hermon Home Bureau, Hermon Library Board and DeKalb Senior Citizens.
