Nellie B. Laclair

Funeral service for Nellie B. LaClair, 94, of Canton will be held on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 3:00 PM at the O'Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; Canton, with Pastor Michael H. Terrell, officiating. Spring burial will be held in the Brick Chapel Cemetery. Nellie died on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at her home.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. The family requests contributions to the Canton United Methodist Church or to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, in lieu of flowers.
Nellie is survived by two sons, James C. LaClair Jr and wife Laurie of Dallas, TX; Daniel L. LaClair and wife Mary of Austin, TX; two daughters, Donna Ferguson and husband Eardley of Lowville, NY; Jackie A. Hebert of Sacramento, CA. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Troy LaClair and wife Kelly of Orange Grove, FL; Danielle LaClair of Austin, TX; Christopher Ferguson and wife Faith of Oxbow, NY and Charles Ferguson of Alaska, and by three great-grandchildren, Trevor, Tanner and Radien and by a sister-in-law Margaret Barbour, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nellie is predeceased by four brothers, Fred, Ned, Neil and Grover Backus and by seven sisters, Blanche, Clara, Nina, Bessie, Florence, Jennie and Inez.
Nellie was born on June 2, 1919 in South Colton, the daughter of the late, Grover C. and Flossie (Loop) Backus. She graduated from Knox-Memorial Central School. She married James C. LaClair whom predeceased her in 1981. Nellie worked for 20+ years for the St. Lawrence County Clerk's Office as a recorder.
Nellie enjoyed gardening, square dancing, sewing and most of all, spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren.
