Millard L. Junior Burwell

Funeral services for Millard L. "Junior" Burwell, 84, of Canton will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 11:00am at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery will follow the service. Mr. Burwell passed away on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at United Helpers Maplewood Campus, Canton.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, February 22, 2010 from 6-8pm. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, United Helpers Maplewood Campus or to St. Lawrence NYSARC.
Surviving Mr. Burwell are a son Tracy and wife Virginia Burwell of Canton; four daughters, Brenda and husband John Newman of Canton; Bonnie and husband Bruce Grant of Dekalb Jct; Cheryl and husband Peter Hoyt of Pierrepont; Candice Passino of Canton; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a brother David and wife Shirley Burwell of Lisbon; sister, Mary and husband Robert Latimer of Canton; a step-son James Hillyard of Texas; and two step-daughters Nancy Kaisserman of Texas and Eleanor Zinn of Mississippi.
A son Terrance Burwell in 2001 and a brother Eugene predecease him.
Millard was born January 31, 1926 in Lisbon, the son of the late Millard E. and Dorthea (Tracy) Burwell. He attended Canton Central School s, leaving to join the NAVY, serving from 1944-1946 in the American Theatre. On June 22, 2001, Mr. Burwell was given his G.E.D. Mr. Burwell worked for the Lisbon Highway Department for 25 years; he worked on the family farm in Lisbon and for St. Lawrence NYSARC retiring in 2001. He married Valda Cogswell on May 15, 1948. He married Edna Buck, who predeceased him in 1987.
Mr. Burwell was a member of the Canton VFW Post 1231 and the Lisbon American Legion. He loved to restore old cars and race cars and enjoyed the coffee shops around the north country.
