Mavis V. Vaughn, 95, passed away on Saturday,November 17, 2014, at St. Regis Nursing Home, Massena, NY. She had been in declining health for several years. A resident of Hannawa Falls since 1945, Mrs. Vaughn had resided at the nursing home since August, 2011.
Per Mrs. Vaughn's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral. Burial will be in Beech Plains Cemetery. Arrangements are with the O'Leary Funeral Service, Canton.
Mrs. Vaughn was born November 10, 1919, in Cooks Corners, NY, the daughter of Wallace and Monica (Leonard) Vebber. She was a 1936 graduate of Colton High School, and a 1937 graduate of Diebert's Business School, Philadelphia, NY. She worked briefly as a private secretary in Saranac Lake, then for several years as a public stenographer before World War II at the Hotel Harrington, Canton. After her marriage, she worked for over 30 years as a self-employed seamstress, and then for an additional 15 years in her son's accounting business.
She was married to Clarence C. Vaughn on April 16, 1945, at the Methodist parsonage in Russell, NY. Mr. Vaughn, a decorated Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and longtime employee of the Potsdam Feed & Coal Company, passed away April 7, 1986.
Survivors include her son, Dale, Hannawa Falls, with whom she resided until entering the nursing home; sisters-in-law Betty Vebber, Pierrepont, Theresa Vebber, Pierrepont, and Sadie Vebber, Colton; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Ray Vebber (1990), Lee Vebber (2004), Fay Vebber (2010), and Floyd Vebber (2012).
Mrs. Vaughn was a wonderful cook and an avid gardener, maintaining a vegetable garden until age 84, and she also enjoyed feeding and watching wild birds. She was very devoted to her cats over the years: Joe, Kit, and Veta.
The family of Mrs. Vaughn would like to thank the staff in the B2 Unit at St. Regis Nursing Home for the wonderful care provided to Mrs. Vaughn during her final years. In lieu of flowers, if one wishes, donations may be made to the Potsdam Animal Shelter, Potsdam, or the St. Lawrence County SPCA, Ogdensburg.
