Marie E. Creighton Obituary- 2/3/16
Marie Elizabeth Creighton, 65 years old, from Canton, NY passed away February 3, 2016 at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY after a recent illness.
Marie was born in Potsdam, New York on September 12, 1950. She was a resident of Riverside Drive Apartments, Canton, NY and most recently at United Helpers Maplewood Campus, State Street Road Canton, NY.
Marie Creighton graduated from Colton-Pierrepont Central School in 1969 and continued her education at CCBI, Syracuse, NY and obtained a degree in secretarial science. Many people will fondly remember Marie as the receptionist at the St. Lawrence County Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, Canton, NY. Marie retired in1986 due to health issues.
Marie was high-spirited and will always be remembered for the kind, caring manner in which she always gave back to the community. She was devoted to her family, especially to her nieces and nephews, and to the wonderful circle of friends that she drew in, inspired and remained loyal to over the years. Marie was a member and officer of a New York State Secretarial Association, a member of Little People of America, a participant on the Msgr. Billmeyer Playground Committee (1989), and a dedicated board member for the St. Lawrence County Independent Living Center in Massena, NY. She was a loyal Clarkson hockey and Syracuse University basketball fan. Marie was often seen at local Clarkson and St. Lawrence Arena hockey games. She traveled throughout the United States to visit friends and relatives and to attend professional conferences.
Marie is survived by her mother Grace Gorman (Creighton) Casselman, Colton, NY, her brother William and Marie Creighton Albany, NY; sisters Suzanne (Creighton) and Daniel Smith, Sackets Harbor, NY and Anne (Creighton) and Richard Castle, Norfolk, NY; six nieces and nephews: Sean and Sarah Castle, Emily (Smith) Ziemba and Michael Smith, and Matthew and Jillian Creighton, three grand-nephews, a step-brother Patrick and Karen Casselman, Ogdensburg, NY, step-sister Cheryl and Ralph Goodwin, Ogdensburg, NY and numerous cousins. Marie was predeceased by her father, Robert W. Creighton (1984), her step-father, Harold Casselman (2005) and a brother, Wayne Creighton (1964).
Marie was a lifelong member of Saint Paul and Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic Parishes South Colton and Colton, respectively as well as St. Mary's Parish in Canton, NY where she resided.
Calling Hours will be held at the O'Leary Funeral Home; Sunday, February 07, 2016 from 4PM to 7 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Canton, on Monday, February 08, 2016 at 10AM. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Colton, NY in the spring.
