Memorial services for Maribelle L. Locke, 72, of Canton will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009 at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton at 6:30pm with Minister John Kashorek, officiating. A gathering at the Canton VFW will follow the service. Mrs. Locke passed away at her home on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 while surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 1-3 and 6-7pm. Contributions in her memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 U.S. Highway 11, Potsdam, New York 13676.
Surviving Mrs. Locke are four children, Randy Locke and companion Rachelle Latimer of Canton, Robin Laraby of unknown address, Renie and Bert Robert of Canton, Rhonda and Scott Thompson of Canton, five sisters, Emily Bercume of Canton, Pauline McMartin of canton, Barb and Lyle Planty of Utica, Judy Chenail of Florida, Roselda and Andre Leduc of Canada; brothers; Burton Hance of Hopkinton, Murton Hance of Heuvelton, James Hance and companion Janet Davis of Morley, 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by a brother Silas Hance and sisters Elsie Tessier and Agnes Savage.
Born June 12, 1936 in Canton, daughter of the late Benjamin and Rose (Davis) Hance, she graduated from Knox Memorial Central School in Russell. A marriage to Willard (Bill) Locke ended in divorce. Maribelle worked for Don's Meat Market and the Canton IGA for several years as well as the working on the custodial staff at Clarkson University in Potsdam.
She enjoyed watching her daughter's horses, feeding the birds, wildlife, reading, spending time with family and friends and taking long walks on the Miner Street Road, where she had resided with her daughter Rhonda and her husband Scott for the past 5 years. She was loved by many and hated by none, a very caring person who would help anyone and everyone if they were in need. She enjoyed playing with her great-grandchildren and was an Auxiliary Member of the Canton VFW Post 1231.
