Funeral mass for Marie Philomena "Phoebe" Gauthier, 86, of 74 State Street, Canton, will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at 11:00am at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Mrs. Gauthier died on Monday, March 8, 2010, at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus. March 8th was the birthday of her late husband, Cameron J. Gauthier.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home on Friday, March 12, 2010, from 2-4 and 6-8pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to North Country Public Radio, 80 East Main Street, Canton, NY 13617 or the WIC Program, 238 Arsenal Street, Watertown, NY 13601.
Surviving Mrs. Gauthier are five children; Dr. Kathryn Gauthier (Robert Gordon), Ottawa, ON; Christine Mace (Rick), Canton; Ellen Gauthier (Dr. Steven Miller), Lewisburg, PA; Edward (Jacqueline), Canton; Loren "Doc" (Bev), Canton; two sisters, Lucia Johnson of Massena; Frances Robson of Roanoke, VA; a brother, Ted Catanzarite of Providence, RI; nine grandchildren, Anna and Sophie Gordon; Steven and Kevin Mace; Lindsay Miller, Graham Gauthier, Katie and Emily Gauthier, Kristen (Gauthier) Jaskowski (Michael) and two great-granddaughters Isabella and Phoebe Jaskowski.
She was predeceased by three brothers; Joseph, Antonio and Frank Catanzarite.
Born January 27, 1924, in Montreal, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late Catherine (Romeo) and Dominick Catanzarite. She graduated from Massena High School in 1941. She received her RN from A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing class of 1945. On May 11, 1946, at St. Mary's Church in Massena, dressed in a wedding gown made from her groom's parachute, she married Cameron J. Gauthier. After 62 years of marriage, Mr. Gauthier predeceased her on June 25, 2008. She worked for many years in the office of Dr. Sapsin in Canton. She retired from the St. Lawrence County Dept. of Scoial Services as county nursing home coordinator. She was a member of the St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society, Grasse River Players, St. Lawrence Chapter of the Sweet Adelines International and American Red Cross Blood Services. She particularly loved opera, classical music, theatre, and hockey, especially the SLU Saints.
