There will be no funeral service or calling hours for Lucille H. Segar, 90, of Canton. Mrs. Segar passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at the United Helpers Nursing Home where she had been a patient since June of 2006. Contributions in her memory may be made to The Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation at P.O. Box 1589, Austin, Texas 78767-1589.
Mrs. Segar is survived by her twin sisters Dorothy Newvine and Doris Carew of Port Orange, Florida and Sylvia Lake and many nieces and nephews.
Her husband James "Sam" Segar, daughter in birth, two brothers Harold and Elmer Hewlett and three sisters Mildred Hewlett Blanding, Irene Hewlett Woodrow and Elsie Hewlett Tyler.
Born in Hermon on May 6, 1918 daughter of the late Otis and Cisley (Gale) Hewlett. She graduated from Hermon Schools and from Potsdam State Teacher College with her Bachelors Degree in Teaching and achieved her MA from St. Lawrence University. She taught school in Hermon, Newcomb, Oswego, Valley Stream and Rome, New York as well as teaching graduate courses at St. Lawrence University. She returned to Canton in 1958 and began teaching at Canton School in 1961 as Reading Coordinator with the district until 1973. Mrs. Segar was responsible for the districts reading program including the program in Rensselear Falls.
She spent her summers at her camp "Timshell" in Sylvia Lake, Fowler, which she considered the best place on earth. Mrs. Segar enjoyed crafts, cooking, entertaining and gardening. She loved to travel and often took her nieces and nephews on family vacations, as well as let them spend their summers with her. Mrs. Segar was an avid reader and held many offices in Delta Kappa Gamma.
