There will be a gathering of family and friends for Lloyd Gilbo, 79, a resident of United Helpers Nursing Home, Canton, on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 1:00pm at O'Leary Funeral Service in Canton. Mr. Gilbo passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the United Helpers Canton Nursing Home where he had been a resident since September 2008.
Spring burial services will be held on Monday, May 4, 2009 at the Crary Mills Cemetery at 11:00am.
Calling hours will also be on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 from 11am until the time of the service. All are asked to bring a memory to share. Burial in the spring will be in Crary Mills Cemetery.
Surviving Mr. Gilbo are his wife of 41 years Nancy, three sons, Lyle and Jeannette Gilbo of Virginia, Richard and Tamako Laraby of Canton, Ronald Gilbo of Pierrepont, two daughters, Sonya and Leon Walts of Syracuse, Robin and Andy Backus of Canton, a brother Arnold W. Gilbo of Syracuse, 10 grandchildren, Edward, Buddy, Samantha and Katherine Gilbo, Andrew and Rebecca Backus, Melissa, Jennifer, Emily and Jessie Walts and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A sister Marion Laraby, adn a grandson Nicklaus Walts predecease him.
Born July 21, 1929 in Norwood, son of the late Lyle E. and Ruth (Barnhart) Gilbo. He entered the Army Air Corp in 1944 and served one term, being honorably discharged in 1946. A marriage to Lela Lacomb ended in divorce. He married Nancy Laraby on November 9, 1968 at the Canton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Wells officiating. Mr. Gilbo worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway, for Lane Construction, Penczek and Sons Construction and for Sheehan Construction.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, and wood cutting. He was an Associate Member of the Canton VFW post 1231 and a member of the Norwood American Legion. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 U.S. Hwy 11, Potsdam, New York 13676.
