Lettie Marie Holmes, the former Lettie Marie Chambers, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 while at home.
Lettie was born in DeGrasse, July 22, 1940 to the late Joseph and Olga (Paro) Chambers. In 1954, she met Tad Raymond Holmes; the couple was married September 28, 1957 at the Canton Methodist Church. Lettie worked as a housekeeper, she worked at Smith's General Store in Langdon Corners, provided child care, took care of the elderly, and was a wife and homemaker. She was also a Sunday school teacher at the Presbyterian Church in Crary Mills for many years.
Lettie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Tad Holmes. Her only son, Walter Holmes and wife Linda of Heuvelton; four daughters, Evelyn Holmes and companion Jon Smith of Gouverneur; Tina Holmes and companion James Davenport of Canton; Tamako Laraby and husband Richard of Canton; and Tasha Gilbo and husband Richard of Gouverneur. She is also survived by her sisters, Etta Hance of DeGrasse; Brenda Whitmarsh and husband Fred of Hermon; Sandra Aldous and husband Robert of Beech Plains; and Shirley Holmes and husband Bernard of Morley; Five granddaughters, four grandsons, two great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
She is predeceased by sisters, Molly Hance; Helen Eggleston; and Theresa Simmons, brothers, James "Zip" Chambers; Charles Chambers; Joseph Chambers; Phillip Chambers and a grandson Ridge Thorbahn in 2011.
Lettie enjoyed her flowers, watching games shows, baking, her cat Molly and many other animals. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to a cancer foundation of one's choice or to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 USH 11; Potsdam, NY 13676.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at 11:00am, at the Pleasant Mound Cemetery, Clare, with Lay Pastoral Assistant Martha Helmer, officiating.
