Funeral services for Leslie Ashley, 74 of Pyrites will be held on Monday, November 2, 2009 at 8:00pm at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. William Hart officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery will be at a later date. Mr. Ashley passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at his home.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, from 2-4 and 7-8pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association.
Surviving Mr. Ashley are a son Frank and his wife Tammy and a daughter Tonya Rood and her husband Floyd all of Pyrites; a sister Annabelle Culver and her husband William of Tioga Center; 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Four brothers, Alton, Jim, David and Infant Paul and a sister Betty Foote predecease him.
Born November 22, 1934 in Pyrites, he was the son of the late Frank and Estella (Whitcomb) Ashley. He attended Pyrites School. Mr. Ashley served in Germany as a tank driver for the US Army from 1953-1955. He married Dorothy Allen on August 4, 1956 at the Canton United Methodist Church; she predeceased him on September 6, 2008.
He worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway, for the Heuvelton Box Plant and in 1959 he became employed by Witherbee and Whalen in Canton as a truck driver, retiring in 1980.
Mr. Ashley enjoyed playing and teaching his grandchildren and nephews how to play the guitar, he was a member of the Canton Sportsman's Club, Canton VFW, NRA and an avid Hunter and Fisherman.
