Funeral mass for Leo J. Kenyon, 78, of Canton will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 9:00am at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Doug Lucia celebrating. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery will follow the service. Mr. Kenyon passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008 at the Canton Potsdam Hospital where he had been a patient since December 5, 2008.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Friday, December 12, 2008. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Mary's Church, Court Street Canton, or to the American Cancer Society.
Surviving Mr. Kenyon are his wife of 54 years Helen, a son Michael "Mickey" Kenyon of Canton, four daughters Katherine Kenyon of Malone, Karen and Thomas Amann of Canton, Mass; Mary Defayette of Plattsburg; Margaret and Richard Pike of Russell; a brother Joe and Kathy Kenyon of Canton; three sisters Helen Pugliese of Mililani, Hawii; Gladys and Michael Lurel of Bathesda, MD; Anne Merrill of Canton; grandchildren Christopher Hodges of Scottsdale, AZ; Chelsea and Mollie Defayette of Plattsburg; Margaret Amann of Canton, Mass; Nathan and Kerri Pike of Russell; and Lilly Kenyon of West Potsdam; a great-grandson Cameron Hodges of Scottsdale, AZ; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A son John in 1963 and a sister Irene McCoy predecease him.
Born October 5, 1930 in Canton, son of the late Floyd and Mary (Jordan) Kenyon. He graduated from Canton Schools in 1950 and on November 25, 1954 he married Helen Moore in a double ring ceremony at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Monsignor Harold Martin officiating. He worked for Slater Food Service at Clarkson University, later working for Claude Guthrie at the Canton Bakery and for Cliff Morey at the Potsdam Bakery before purchasing the Canton Bakery which they operated from August 1967 until August of 1996.
In 1986 Leo was named "Citizen of the Year" by the local VFW Post 1231 in appreciation and praise for service rendered. In 1988 the Canton Fire Department chose him as "Man of the Year". He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, Canton Fire Department, Canton Lions Club and a communicant of St. Mary's Church.
