Funeral service for Mr. Lawrence C. Sheridan, 84, of Pyrites, will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at 11:00am at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton. Spring burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Canton on Wednesay, May 25, 2011 at 11:00am. Mr. Sheridan passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
Surviving Mr. Sheridan are his wife of 54 years, Frances; two sons, Lawrence Sheridan Jr. and wife Susan of Bucks Bridge; Wayne Sheridan and wife Joyce of Crary Mills; a daughter Colleen Sheridan of Pyrites; two brothers, R. Neil Sheridan and wife Noreen and Richard F. Sheridan and wife Ollie, all of Canton and two grandchildren, John Lawrence Sheridan of Canton and Ashleigh Sheridan of Crary Mills and several nieces and nephews.
A sister Barbara Bice-Cota and an infant brother William predecease him.
Lawrence was born October 18, 1926 in Ogdensburg, son of the late John L. and Mildred (Johnson) Sheridan. He attended Pyrites and Canton Schools graduating in 1942. He then went into the Navy, later the Army and eventually the Air Force, serving on D Day and in Korea prior to retiring with honorable discharge in 1966. During his military service, Lawrence was award many service medals, including an American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal, European Theatre Medal with 2 Stars, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal as well as Korean Service Medal.
On June 20, 1956 he married Frances Brabaw at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jack Wells officiating. The couple lived in Texas, Newburgh, NY, Plattsburg and Watertown before returning to Canton. Lawrence worked for the Post Office in Pyrites and Canton. He received a degree in Criminal Justice from Canton ATC in 1976. He worked in the heating, air conditioning and refrigeration department at Canton ATC for 22 years retiring in 1988. Following his retirement he worked for the Board of Elections as an inspector.
Lawrence was a member of the Canton VFW Post 1231; he was a member of the Mason's, Waddington American Legion, an associate member of the West Potsdam Fire Department. He liked to read, do crossword puzzles, he enjoyed Giants Football, NASCAR, was a history buff and his dog Rusty.
