Funeral mass for Joseph R. Carroll, 81, of Canton will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 12:00pm at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia, celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Mr. Carroll passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2010.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, November 4, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam.

Surviving Mr. Carroll are a son David and Synthia Carroll of Canton; two daughters, Suzanne Davis and husband Nelson of Loudonville, NY and Patricia Wilson and husband Thomas of Howell, NJ; seven grandchildren, Shannon and Joseph Davis, Devin, Colin and Keegan Carroll, Alexandria and Kayleigh Wilson and a great-grandson, Jordan David Carroll.

Joseph was born May 17, 1929 in Potsdam, son of the late Kenneth and Kathryn (Cardinal) Carroll. He graduated from Canton Schools and attended LeMoyne College. On August 14, 1954, he married Jeanne Martin at St. Mary's Church in Canton; she predeceased him in 1993.He worked for GJ Ralph Food Brokerage in Syracuse and Liverpool,Pepperidge Farms as a salesman, Employers Insurance of Wausau, and was a St. Lawrence County Court Clerk.

Mr. Carroll was Irishman of the year in 1970 and 1976. He was a lifetime member of the Potsdam Elks Lodge, he started the first Canton High School girl's hockey team and was past president of the Canton Club. Joe started the St. Mary's Gaelic Society which raised money for St. Mary's School with their annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner.
