Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph R. Longshore, 69, of Canton will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 2:00pm at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia celebrating. Burial will be in the Morley Cemetery. Joe died on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 while at home under the care of family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home; 5821 US Hwy 11, on Friday, October 21, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Mary's Catholic School or the Canton Fire and Rescue.
Surviving Joe are his wife of 48 years, Charlene of Canton; a daughter Lori and Gregory Camden of Virginia Beach; a son Joseph R. Longshore II and Susanne of DeKalb Jct, grandchildren Courtney Camden of Virginia Beach and Noah and Jonah Longshore of DeKalb Jct; brothers, William and Lisa Longshore of Morley; Thomas and Toni Longshore of Plattsburgh; by sisters, Sharon and Vince Tyo of Massena; Lynn and John Manson of Canton and Debra and Richard Jackson of Columbia, SC; and by several nieces and nephews and many other loving family members.
Joe is predeceased by a sister Joanne Thomas.
Joe was born October 2, 1942 in Ogdensburg, son of the late Frederick and Myrtle (Gemmill) Longshore. He graduated from Canton Schools in 1961. On July 27, 1963 he married Charlene Lynn Martin at the St. Ann's Church in St. Regis Falls with Rev. Beyette, officiating. Joe worked as a butcher and meat manager for several local grocery stores, including Canton IGA, Canton P&C and ACME Markets. He received several first place division awards for meat cutting. Joe was hard working, starting at age 8 or 9 shoveling driveways and mowing lawns for people all over the village of Canton. Joe never met a stranger; he made friends everywhere he went and was loved by many.
Joe was a member of various classic car associations, former BPOE Elks Member of Ogdensburg, and a volunteer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and communicant of St. Mary's Church. Joe was a perpetual vehicle purchaser and a classic car enthusiast. He loved spending time with his family, especially his wife, children and grandchildren. God is Great; Beer is Good, GO YANKEES.
