Memorial services for John B. Heaton, 90, of Canton will be held at 8pm on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at O'Leary Funeral Service in Canton. Mr. Heaton passed away on Monday, February 16, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family, while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Friends may call at O'Leary Funeral Service in Canton on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from 2-4 and 7pm till the time of the service. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative care of the St. Lawrence Valley, or to the Canton VFW Post 1231 or the Madrid American Legion.
Surviving Mr. Heaton are three daughters, Ginny and Don Stein of Cleveland, OH; Joan Ashley of Hermon; and Jane Stein of Miami Beach, Fl; his beloved niece Jeannie and husband Terry Ross and nephew Steve and wife Adelaide Killam all of Barnard, VT; 8 grandchildren and 11great-grandchildren.
His wife Bette and sister Francis Killam predecease him.
Born January 30, 1919 in Canton, son of the late Frank C. and Bessie (Barnett) Heaton, he graduated from Canton High in 1937 and attended Canton A.T.I. for a year before going to serve in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. He was a 1st Lieutenant and piloted B-24 bombers in the south pacific. He married Elizabeth Kelly in Madrid on December 10, 1943.
Mr. Heaton was employed by Alcoa in Massena, St. Lawrence University and for the Canton Housing Authority as custodian at the Riverside Drive apartments from 1974 until his retirement in November of 1984. He remained a resident of Riverside Drive Apartments until his death.
He loved his dog Barney, enjoyed wood working and conversing with his many friends. He will be remembered for his wit and humor.
