Memorial service for Ivan B. Averill, 87, of Norfolk, will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the O'Leary Funeral Home, Canton with Pastor Michael Terrell, officiating. Ivan died on Sunday, April 5, 2015 at his home in Norfolk. Burial in the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Lowell, MA will be held at a later date.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, MAy 16, from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
Ivan was born, April 10, 1927 in Hopkinton, the son of the late George and Millie (Bisnett) Averill. He attended Parishville and Potsdam Schools. In 1945, Ivan enlisted in the US Air Force and went on to serve in Germany, England and Thailand before retiring from active service in July of 1966. He continued on serving his country as a civilian representative working in Military Logistics. He later owned and operated the Riverview Cabins in Morristown for several years.
Ivan loved to travel to see family and friends, joining the daily coffee club at the McDonald's in Billerica, MA, he enjoyed country music and following artists all over the country. He also enjoyed gardening.
Ivan is survived by four nephews, Dennis Averill of VT; Deland Averill of Chazy; Raymond Woodley Jr of Canton and Robert Simpson of OH; by four nieces, Donna Stevens of OH; Debbie Hanrahan of Plattsburgh; Sandra Ragan of FL and Cyndy Woodley of Hannawa Falls, as well as by many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his life partner Leonard Ogonosky on September 23, 2010, as well as by brothers, Pliny and Donald Averill and by sisters Doris Sheets and Ilene Woodley and by his poodle Moxie.
Contribution in his memory in lieu of flowers may be made to the Norfolk Volunteer Rescue Squad or the the Norfolk VFW post.
