Calling Hours for H. Robert "Duck" Carrier, 83, of Canton will be held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 from 6-9pm at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton. Mr. Carrier passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital. A private funeral with military honors will be held.
Robert was born April 14, 1927 in Utica, New York, the son of the late Ray and Anna (Schlager) Carrier. He attended Utica Free Academy. He enlisted in the United States Navy in February 1945 during WWII at the age of 17. After boot camp he was shipped overseas, places on the U.S.S. Vulcan's, were he became a boatswain 3rd class for a year and a half. He was offered to go to Annapolis to become and officer; upon discharge he was offered reassignment to become a Chief Boatswain on a naval tug, refusing both offers to return home to marry Sylvia Cox. The couple was married on September 21, 1946 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Utica with Pastor Arnold officiating. Mrs. Carrier predeceased him on February 3, 2003.
He retired from Bardhal/Bowes as a distributor in 1990.
Mr. Carrier was a lifetime member of the Canton VFW Post 1231, past member and two time past master of the Colton Masonic Lodge and Pierrepont Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed Baseball, Softball and was a golf enthusiast. He loved traveling, fishing, sports and reading. He lived in Pierrepont from 1954-1979 moving to a mobile home in Canton until 2000 where he moved to 35 Riverside Dr.
Surviving "Duck" are a son Richard and wife Diana of Pierrepont; daughter Susan and husband Harry Berube of Canton; 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Ray, Ralph and William Carrier and a sister Barbara Carrier.
A brother Donald predeceased him.
