Fred Amo

September 19, 1938 — February 8, 2025

Hermon, New York

Hermon - Frederick (Fred) Amo, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, surrounded by his loving wife and family, after a prolonged illness.

Fred was born on September 19th, 1938 in Canton, New York, the son of the late George and Gladys (Ames) Amo. As a boy, Fred attended Canton schools. He married Sandra Bacon on August 24th, 1957.

Fred worked as an Operator in the Operating Engineers Union for several decades, retiring in 1997. He also operated the Hermon sawmill for several years as Tracy & Amo. Upon retirement, he drove trucks for French's Trucking in Russell for several years and was also the owner of Fred's RV, a snowmobile repair business out of his home.

Fred was a longtime member and past president of the Hermon Sledders and the Grasse Pond Hunting Club. He enjoyed spending time in the woods at his own hunting camp in Clare and would look for any reason to spend the day there. Fred enjoyed camping, working in his shop, and spent countless hours repairing small engines for numerous people as well as maintaining his own heavy equipment. A day in the shop or the woods was never wasted time.

Fred is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sandra, sons Lawrence (Kay) of Russell, Martin (Shelly) of DeKalb and a daughter, Debra Hale (Jeff) of DeKalb and five grandchildren: Tyler Amo, Travis Amo, Dylan Amo, Tanner Hale and Rylie Hale, also a brother, David Amo of Canton. Fred had a huge love for his children, grandchildren and his cat, Luckie.

In addition to his parents, Fred is predeceased by sisters, Jean (Art) Deleel, Joan (Gary) MacDonald, brother Terry, and sister-in-law Kathleen (David) Amo.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 15th, from 1-3 pm at the O'Leary Funeral Home, Canton. A funeral service will be held immediately following with a spring burial in the Hermon Cemetery.
