Funeral services for Edward James Colton, 85, of Canton formerly of Russell, will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 11:00am with his son in law Lenny Stowell speaking. Burial will be in the South Russell Cemetery. Mr. Colton passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital where he had been admitted on Tuesday.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, February 13, 2009 from 7-9pm. Contributions in his memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Surviving Mr. Colton are a daughter Nancy and her husband Lenny Stowell of Virginia Beach, a brother Herbert Colton of Chestertown, NY; daughter-in-law Debbie Colton of Degrasse; 7 grandchildren and 12 Great-grandchildren; close family friend Barb and Jim Latray; and Donna LaRock and Larry Trombley, his caretakers for the past several years.
His wife, Mary Alice Garrison, a son David Colton, brothers Gilbert, Francis and Merton Colton predecease him.
Mr. Colton was born September 2, 1923 in Edwards, son of the late Francis and Blanche (Paro) Colton. He attended Pottersville Schools and joined the United States Army serving from 1943-1945. On April 21, 1946 at the Chestertown Methodist Church he married Mary Alice Garrison with Rev. Fred Royce officiating. Mr. Colton servied for many years on the executive board of Local 545 contractors union and worked for canton Golf car.
He enjoyed playing golf, and was Past Chief of the Russell Volunteer Fire Department.
