Funeral service for Edgar Eells Jr., 90, of Russell, will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 1:00pm at the O'Leary Funeral Home, Canton with his grandson, Robert LaClair, officiating. Burial will be in the South Russell Cemetery. Edgar passed away peacefully, while in the company of family on Thursday, March 02, 2017 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Calling hours will be at the funeral home on Sunday, from 11:00am until the time of the service. Contributions in his memory may be made to Meals-On-Wheels or the Russell Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Edgar is survived by four step-daughters, Virginia (Robert) LaClair of Morristown; Avon Palmer of Elmira Heights; Laverne (Reuben) Sero of Russell and Faye Menineger of Syracuse. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, several grand and great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a sister, Cora Bice, of Canton.
Edgar is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents, and six siblings; James "Calvin", Jason, Charles "Milton", Herbert Eells, Jane Paro and Inez Downer.
Edgar was born February 5, 1927 in Pierrepont, the son of Edgar and Gertrude (Sibley) Eells. He attended the Stone School House in Pierrepont to the eighth grade. On September 6, 1966, Edgar married Mary Bice in Wompsville, NY with the Justice of the Peace officiating. Edgar was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator at J& L Mines, a farm hand, a truck driver for Harry Harmer, and worked for the St. Lawrence County Office of the Aging on a mail route. Edgar served his country in WWII during the Pacific Theatre Operation from, 1945 until 1947, when he was honorably discharged.
Edgar enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting wood. He loved the out of doors and sitting in the sunshine. Most of all, Edgar was a devoted husband, caring for Mary day in and day out while she suffered through dementia in her final years.
