Graveside service for Dorothy E. Blodgett, 93, of Canton and formerly of North Carolina will be held in the spring at the Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC. Dorothy passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the United Helpers Nursing Home in Canton where she had been a resident since 2010.
Surviving Dorothy are two daughters, Cynthia Annas (Larry) of Newton, NC and Susan Marquart (Stuart) of Canton, NY; a son, Steven Blodgett (Susan Laribee) of Sackets Harbor, NY. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret LaFontaine of Danville, VA and Frances Green of Maiden, NC as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A brother, Robert Collins and a sister Helen Dunaway predeceased her.
Dorothy was born, March 29, 1922 in Camp Mills, NY, the daughter of the late Norva and Arlie (Ranney) Collins. She graduated from Smithville Elementary School, a two-room school house, in 1934 and from Adams Central School in 1939 and went on to graduate from Mercy School of Nursing in 1943. Dorothy worked as a Registered Nurse for Mercy Hospital, the House of the Good Samaritan and for various doctors in Watertown, NY. On June 8, 1947 she married Robert D. Blodgett at the Smithville Baptist Church. From 1960-1970 she worked at Red Cross Blood Drives in Watertown and was the secretary for Blodgett Oil Service from 1957-1979 in Sackets Harbor, NY. The couple moved to Hickory, NC in 1983, where Dorothy worked as a teacher at the Newvelle Day Care Center and the Mountain View Day Care Center.
Dorothy moved in with her daughter Susan in 2005 and to United Helpers Maplewood in 2010. She was an avid gardener and was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Sackets Harbor, NY.
