Funeral services for Donald G. Smith, 95, of Canton will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 12:00pm at the St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Donald Manfred celebrating. Burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Colton will follow the service. Mr. Smith passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley, 6805US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676
Surviving Mr. Smith are two sons, Thomas M. Smith and wife Sharon of Schenectady; Joel E. Smith of Rochester; a daughter Melinda Gault and husband Lee of Dexter; a sister Elizabeth Manfred of Hannawa Falls and four grandchildren, Caitlin and Alexander Smith and Justin and Ryan Gault.
Born May 10, 1914 in Colton, Don is the son of the late George T. and Laura (Hart) Smith. He graduated from Potsdam Schools and attended North Western University and graduated from Clarkson University in 1941. He served in the US Army from 1943-1946. He married Catherine Prashaw on April 7, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Massena with Rev. Michael Jarecki officiating. She predeceased him on June 20, 2007.
Don owned Smith's Grill on Water Street in Potsdam, he was the manager of the Book Store at Potsdam State for 12 years, owned the Canton Liquor Store from 1975-1986; he sold real estate for Paul Fournier in Massena until retiring in 1992. Later, he was a courier for Community Bank.
Mr. Smith is a member of the American Legion, a life member of the VFW and the 4th National Infantry Division Association, an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, an usher at St. Mary's Church and past member of the Stillwater and Moosehead hunting clubs. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching sports, especially the Yankees. He was a Potsdam Village trustee and member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge and Holy Name Society and served on the St. Mary's Parish Council, all in Potsdam. He also enjoyed History and reading, especially about WWI.
