Mass of Christian Burial for Donald L. McKenna, 84, or Court Street, Canton, will be held on Friday, July 10, 2015 at 11:00 AM St. Mary's Catholic Church, Canton with Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Don died on Sunday, July 5, 2015 while at home with family.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 from 2-4 PMand 7-9 Pm at the O'Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; Canton. Contributions in his memory may be made to St. Mary's Church, 66 Court Street; Canton, New York 13617.
Don was born on November 6th, 1930 in Potsdam, son of the late Leo and Frances (Mackey) McKenna. He graduated from Potsdam High School in 1949. Don entered the United States Navy January 3rd, 1951. He was discharged on November 9th, 1954 and while in the service he was a metal smith, second class and he received the National Defense Service Medal. He served three years, 10 months, 7 days, most of all on the USS Preserver ARS-8 Ship. He married Anna Jermano on July 30th, 1960 at St. Mary's church in Massena with MSGR. Leary officiating.
Surviving are his wife Anna, three sons, Mark J. of Canton; Patrick J. (Susan) of Fayetteville; Raymond L. (Michelle) of Baldwinsville and a daughter, Maureen (Michael) Regan of Saratoga. Also surviving are two brothers; Thomas Gerald (Shirley) McKenna of Potsdam and Laurence (Michelle) McKenna of Norwood. He has seven grandchildren Alexa and Paige McKenna, Michael, McKenzie and Mylea Regan of Saratoga and Samantha and Kailey of Fayetteville.
He is predeceased by two brothers Bernard (John) and Richard McKenna.
He was employed for a time at Potsdam welding, working on bridges, buildings and fire escapes. He then worked at St. Lawrence University in the plumbing and heating department for 35 years and retired in the early 90's. Don was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Sarto Council 1059 for over 50 years. He was a number caller at K of C bingo for over 35 years. He loved golf, football, hockey, basketballand soccer. He was a communicant of St. Mary's church. He always gave willingly to his community and church.
