Funeral service for Don O. Thompson, 75, of Hammond and formerly of Canton will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 1:00PM at St. Mary's Church in Canton with Rev. Jay Seymour, celebrating. Don passed away on Friday, January 02, 2015 while at home under the care of family and Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton, on Sunday, January 4, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm and again on Monday, January 5 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative of the St. Lawrence Valley or the Hammond Masonic Lodge # 861.
Don is survived by his wife of 35 years, Marcia of Hammond; a daughter, Sarah St.Pier of Hammond; a son, Don Bernard Thompson and wife Amanda of Baldwinsville; two grandchildren, Kaia Rose Jordan and newly arrived Penelope Elaine Thompson. Also surviving are three sisters, Sherry Theobald and husband Walter of Potsdam; Linda Wilkinson of Potsdam and Sharon Allen of Columbus, OH; three nieces, three nephews and several great nieces and nephews.
Don is predeceased by a bother-in-law, James Allen.
Don was born, August 7, 1939 on the family farm in Canton, the son of the late, Don S. and Dorothy M. (Perry) Thompson. He attended Canton School. Don was a member of the Canton United Methodist Church in his early years, the 4H club, and later the St. Lawrence Masonic Lodge #111 in Canton and later the Hammond Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #861. On April 21, 1979 he married Marcia A. Ragan at St. Mary's Church in Canton, the couple resided on the family farm until it was sold in 1989.Don worked briefly for the Mitchell and Dunham Farm, and Brinks Security of Watertown. He worked many summers at the Captain's Landing in Alexandria Bay and part time during the winter for the Village of Hammond and Hammond Central School as a custodian.
Don loved to hunt, he was a licensed ham radio operator and enjoyed old cars and tractors and loved going to the Gouverneur and St. Lawrence County fair as well as the New York State Fair. As a farmer at heart, he enjoyed gardening, reading and could tell you never ending stories of being on the farm. His favorite place to be was at camp in Colton with family. He and Marcia also like to travel when they could to places like London, Acapulco, Florida and NYC.
