David L. Kingston

September 23, 1945 — October 4, 2024

Canton, New York

Canton – David L. Kingston, 79, died peacefully at home on Friday, October 4, 2024 while under the care of family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.

David was born September 23, 1945 in Rochester, New York, son of the late Lloyd J. and Josephine F. (Petrillo) Kingston. Dave was always very athletic and a fine competitor. A 1964 graduate of Canton Central, after a stint in the Air Force, he attended ATC and later Potsdam State, becoming a Social Studies Teacher, he taught for 30 years (Canton Central High School). Dave coached (Hockey) a few years and also started Canton Central's fitness room.

While attending school himself, sports were a big part of Dave's life. High School "All Northern" in Section 10 Hockey and Track and Field. His senior year, he set a new pole vault record, at 12'6". Dave held that record for 22 years.

At ATC, Dave's athletic ability lead him to become a "Top Wing" hockey player and a new competitive Javelin thrower. Setting a Javelin record at a toss of 183'; a regional record. At Potsdam State, Dave set one more record, 1971-72 SUNYAC Javelin Competition with a throw of 196'.

As mentioned, Dave coached boy's Hockey at Canton Central, his team worked very hard and showed great enthusiasm. A big win for them in late Seventies was in Lake Placid, the crowd was outnumbered with more Canton fans than Lake Placid Fans. The game was very exciting, culminating in a Bear's victory 4-2, being the first time in years the Bear's beat Lake Placid in their home rink, the 1932 Olympic Rink. That same season, the Bear's played the Section 10 Championship Game at the old Walker Area, Clarkson Campus, sadly to fall to Massena. Exciting times in Section 10.

Dave's retirement years he stayed active by competing in NYS Senior Empire Games, making the grade, one gold, one silver, one bronze medal in Javelin throw and 100 yard dash, in his class.

Gears shifted for Dave as he became a proud grandfather. He found great pleasure watching and supporting Lila Carvel compete in Soccer and Track and Field.

Lastly, on to Dave's love of traveling. Over the years he traveled across the United States, panned for gold in Alaska and Canada and visited 33 other countries in his lifetime. Amazing! The excitement Dave shared with many over the years, all the endless stories of his travels will last forever with family, friends and colleagues.  Thank you Mr. Kingston.

Dave is survived by a daughter, Jessica Kingston and husband Brian Carvel, granddaughter Lila Kingston Carvel, Jessica's mother, N. Michele Lord, Jessica's siblings, Heather Kotula Kiah and Heath Kotula; his sisters Rose Marie Kingston-Costanzo and Sylvia Kingston, nieces, Anna Costanzo and Shelly Peria; brother-in-law, Michael Costanzo and dear friend Donka Kingston.
