Funeral services for Clarence E. Ames, 73, of Canton will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 9:30am at the O'Leary Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. Douglas Lucia officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Madrid. Mr. Ames passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at his home surrounded by family while under the care of Hospice of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley or to St. Mary's Church in Canton.
Surviving Mr. Ames are his wife of 52 years, Shirley of Canton, two daughters, Robin Finn and husband Rich of Simpsonville, SC; and Penny Ames and husband Tom of Potsdam; three grandchildren, Ryan and Reid Finn of Simpsonville, SC and Jessica Ames of Potsdam; two brothers, Donald Ames of Pierrepont and Leo Ames of Potsdam; six sisters, Eleanor Cassoni of Carthage; Ruth Robar of Potsdam; Sharon Simmons of White Plains; Karol Mace, Janet Aldous, and Katheryn Fountain all of Canton.
Brothers Charles Jr; Arthur and Joseph Ames and sisters Elizabeth Acra and Margaret Ames predecease him.
Born October 25, 1936 in Canton, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Katheryn (Burke) Ames. He attended St. Mary's School and Canton High School. He worked 30 years for A W Collins Corp and 15 years for the ARC in Canton as a driver and mailman. He married Shirley Murray on November 23, 1957 at St. John's Church in Madrid with Rev. Dewey celebrating.
Mr. Ames was an associate member of the Canton VFW; he loved sport and the outdoors and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Canton.
