Catherine D. Peggs, 102, of Canton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10th after a brief hospital stay. Catherine was born February 8, 1924 in Canton, the daughter of the late Clarence and Mary Ayers Denesha.
She graduated from Canton Central High School in 1941 and began her working career at the Queensboro Milk Plant in Gouverneur. In 1948 she began a 38 year career working in the business office at St. Lawrence University.
In August, 1955, she was married to John J. Toomey. He passed away unexpectedly in 1973 and in June, 1991, she married Richard J. Peggs. Catherine was predeceased by both of her husbands along with her brother, Jack, sister, Bette and Fred Geier.
Catherine is survived by her nephew, Tom Gilmore (Joy) and her niece, Patty Geier. She is also survived by her stepson, David Peggs, and wife Jean, two step daughters, Cindy and Nancy Peggs, granddaughters, Courtney Collins and Ashley Peggs, great-grandchildren Makenna, Quinn and Luke, along with several nephews.
Her family would like to take this opportunity to recognize and give special thanks to Bill and Ginger Mason, Molly Powers, Kaitlin Corscadden and Ron Aldous, all of whom have committed endless hours and sacrifice over the years in helping to care for Catherine. We wouldn't have been able to allow her to live out her days in her own home without their help.
There will be calling hours on Sunday, March 15th from 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. at O'Leary Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, March 16th at St. Mary's Church. Catherine was a lifetime communicant of St. Mary's Church.
A burial service at St. Mary's Cemetery will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.
Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Mary's Church, 68 Court Street; Canton, New York 13617.
