Carolyn B. (Bates) Monteith

March 1, 1928 — October 2, 2015

Carolyn Ardis Bates Monteith passed away ¬peacefully on October 2, 2015.  She was born March 1, 1928, in Milton, MA, to Oscar Kenneth Bates and Francis Guest Westbrook Bates.
Carolyn was raised in Canton, NY, graduated from Canton High School and continued her education at St. Lawrence University.  While attending college, she met her future husband, Walter Monteith and were married in 1949.  Carol raised her family while completing her degree at SLU.  She went on to receive her Master's in Education at SUNY Potsdam.  She began her teaching career in Russell then went on to teach at Canton Central School.  During her career, she touched the lives of many students.  After her retirement in 1984, she continued to be remembered by many of them.
Carolyn loved the St. Lawrence River where she spent her summers throughout her life.  To her, the River was a constant, a place for family and friends to gather and share good times. She enjoyed gardening, her dogs, and sharing times with her neighbors. Family was always an important part of her life.  Recently, she was reunited with her brother, Westbrook, and sister, Sally, and their families at the cottage in Red Mills.
Carol leaves behind her four children: Jerome Monteith and wife, Amber; Elizabeth Hewlett and husband, Patrick; Thomas Monteith and Nancy McCullough; and Katherine Baker and husband, Richard. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Greg Monteith, Teresa Monteith Berry, Krista Monteith, Matthew Monteith, Jacob Baker, Nathan Baker and Megan Hughes as well as three great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her husband, Walter; sister, Margaret Bates; and grandson,Ian Baker.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, NY, on October 12th at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society or the SPCA.
