Carlton Lee Doane

Canton – Carlton Lee Doane, 86, died peacefully in the comfort of his home on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

Carlton was born April 9, 1937 in Bakersfield, Vermont, a son of the late Tennyson and Floy (Camp) Doane. He attended Bakersfield Schools and achieved graduate degrees from University of Vermont and St. Lawrence University. On October 16, 1965, he married Phyllis Ellen Thompson, whom he shared 58 wonderful years.

Carlton possessed many different attributes, firstly he was a generous giver of both time and money, giving to numerous charities and causes over his lifetime. Second, he was a Vermont Mountain Man, growing up in northern Vermont, he developed a love for the area that spanned his lifetime. He was a professional volunteer, setting an example as a leader, whether at the Canton United Methodist Church or for the many other organizations to which he contributed.

Carlton was a cat lover, especially Miss Hermit. He had an appreciation for music having been a former member of the Canton Goldenaires and the church choir. Carlton enjoyed splitting his time between homes, he and Phyllis were "Snow Birds" in Florida, Ocean Lovers in Maine, Mountain Viewers in Vermont and just Phyllis and Carlton at their home in Morley.  Lastly, but most importantly, he was a family man to his wife, children and grandchildren.

Carlton worked for the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4H Program in Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, he was the Director of Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) for St. Lawrence County and he worked as a counselor for the NYS Department of Corrections. Over the years, Carlton was awarded several community service awards, such as the Pamona Grange Public Service, Rachel Somers Grant Social Action from the Unitarian Universalist Church, Community Volunteer of the Year from Ogdensburg and Riverview Correctional Facilities, Jacqueline Sears Volunteer Award, and St. Lawrence County Senior Citizen of the Year.

Carlton was President of the New York State Wide Senior Action Council, Morley Cemetery Association, St. Lawrence Chapter of AARP, St. Lawrence Valley Dog Club and Assistant Director of the North Central New York Walk to Emmaus. He was a member of the Northern Flow United Methodist District Committee of Ordained Ministry, the St. Lawrence County Office of the Aging Advisory Council, Canton Community Fund, Kairos Prison Ministry, Rotary, a former 4H Leader and National 4H Fellow. Carlton was treasurer of the Silas Wright Grange, founder of the Free Will Dinner at the Canton UMC, and help with 12 Guiding Eye Dogs.

Carlton is survived by he devoted wife of 58 years, Phyllis Ellen Thompson Doane, three children, Jonathan (Marie) Doane, Carlene Doane (Abdelkrim Moumen) and Nathaniel Doane, grandchildren, Christopher and Alexander Doane and Zakaria, Maysa, Salma and Amal Moumen, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Holden and Harrison Doane and a sister, Katherine Brown.

A memorial service for Carlton will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Canton United Methodist Church, Court Street, Canton.
