Funeral service for Betty Jean Powers LaPoint, 82, of Hermon will be held on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 10:00am at the O'Leary Funeral Home, Park St, Canton with Ann Davis, lay speaker, officiating. Burial will follow in the Hermon Cemetery. Betty Jean passed away on Friday, April 08, 2011 at her home under the care of family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice.
Friends may call at the O'Leary Funeral Home on Sunday, April 10, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Contributions may be made to Russell Volunteer Fire and Rescue or to Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lawrence, eight children, Kay Facey and companion Mike Yeardon of Ogdensburg; Lawrence LaPoint Jr. and wife Laurie of Norwood; Rogene LaRock and husband Jerry of Russell; Margaret Mousaw and husband Jeff of Russell; Dennis LaPoint and wife Jeanne of Hermon; Craig LaPoint and wife Toni of Carthage; Rose Matthews and husband Dale of Dekalb Jct; and Darr LaPoint of Hermon.; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also by a sister Helen Barstow and husband Robert of Tupper Lake, formerly of Potsdam; two brothers, Bower E. Powers and wife Jane and Gale and Agnes Powers, both of Pierrepont.
Betty Jean is predeceased by a grandson Michael LaRock, by two brothers Robert D and John Powers and by a sister Ruth Anderson.
Betty Jean was born October 3, 1928 in Pierrepont, daughter of the late Bower E. and Anna (Forward) Powers. She graduated from Canton Schools in 1948. She married Lawrence LaPoint on November 2, 1951 at her family home in Pierrepont. Mrs. LaPoint worked with her husband on the family farm, retiring in 2007.
She was a member of the National Farmer Organization. She enjoyed hunting and traveling.
