Mrs. Shirley (Planty) Smith, 80, of Canton died on Saturday, December 28, 2019, while surrounded by her children, at the United Helpers Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Canton, where she had been a resident for just over a year.
Shirley was born January 16, 1939 in Potsdam, a daughter of the late Mason and Helen (Davis) Planty. She attended Canton Schools. On October 1, 1955; Shirley married Jack N. Smith at the Baptist Parsonage in Richville. Shirley worked as a nurse aide at the United Helpers Nursing Home, retiring in 1995.
Shirley enjoyed knitting, crocheting and decorating wedding cakes, camping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by six children, Erwin (Karen) Smith of Webster, NY; Michael (Kimberly) Smith of Duluth, GA; David (Lori) Smith of Canton; James Smith of Canton; Debra (Kevin) Mousaw of Canton and Nicole Zeledon and companion Thomas Zandi of Carthage; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was predeceased by her beloved husband Jack, on February 9, 2018; two brothers, Richard and Herbert Planty; sisters, Eleanor Munn and Sarah Planty in infancy.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 from 11:00 am until the time of her funeral service at 1:00 pm. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Fairview Cemetery.
