Matt R. McGregor, 63, of Canton died unexpectedly, at home, in his sleep on Sunday, December 8, 2019.
Matt was born May 4, 1956 in Gouverneur, a son of the late Robert and Margaret (Scott) McGregor. He graduated from Potsdam High School in 1975 and was one of the first wrestlers from the area to place in states. Matt worked at Shade Roller in Ogdensburg and then became a NYS Correctional Officer in 1990 until his retirement in 2016. A marriage to Sue Burke ended in divorce but they remained close friends.
From riding motorcycles and woodworking, to “Good Nuff” Construction and “Anvil Acres”, Matt’s don’t give a **** attitude and sense of humor left its mark on all whom he met. He was always there to lend a hand and to be sure you knew how he would do it and if you got invited in for a burger or steak from one of the cows he raised, you knew it would be good because he always said, “You can’t beat McGregor’s meat”.
Matt was also a long-time member and former assistant chief of the Canton Volunteer Fire Department, where just Saturday he had been recognized for 35 years of dedicated service. Contributions to honor his memory may be made to the Canton Fire Department at 77 Riverside Drive, Canton, New York 13617 or online at www.cantonfirerescue.com.
Matt is survived by his sons, Scott McGregor and Shawn (Betsy Hebert) McGregor, all of Canton; his chosen children, Tim and Caroline Gavin of Canton and their children, Nathaniel and Evelyn. Also surviving are siblings, Marnie Dancause of Heuvelton and Lynn McGregor of Potsdam as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours for Matt will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 12:00 pm in the apparatus bay at the Canton Fire Station, 77 Riverside Drive, Canton.
