Loretta Sharpstene Obituary

Loretta K. (Moulton) Sharpstene, 92, of DeKalb and formerly of Clare, died peacefully surrounded by family at the United Helpers Nursing Home in Ogdensburg. Loretta was born, November 7, 1927 in Canton, a daughter to the late Bernard and Harriet (Fountain) Moulton. She attended schools in Clare and Hermon and graduated from Pilgrim State Hospital of Nursing in 1952. She married Jack W. Hall on September 22, 1945 but later divorced. On May 5, 1975, Loretta married John A. Sharpstene, whom predeceased her on August 2, 1979. Loretta worked at Clifton-Fine Hospital and later for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services as the head of adoption. Being a licensed nurse in both New York and Florida, Loretta also worked in nursing homes in both states as well. She enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, knitting, playing cards but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren whom she adored. She was active in area senior citizen’s groups, including Past President of Russell Senior Citizens and New York State representative for senior citizens groups. Loretta was also an active member of the DeGrasse United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon (David) Peabody of Clare; a son, Sheldon (Frances) Hall of Clare; five grandchildren, Kim Peabody of Clare, Amy (Brad) Harmer of Fowler, David (Janine) Peabody of Clare, Rebecca (Mike) Perry of Russell and Ashley Deal, Garner, NC; 12 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Satu of Cumberland, KY, brother, Jack (Marylou) Moulton of Milford, NY and nieces Jeanne and Michelle and a great-niece and two great-nephews. Also surviving are John’s daughter, Margie Trotter and step-grandchildren. A son, Stephen Hall; a brother, Richard Moulton and two step-children, Bonnie Tacy and John Sharpstene predecease her. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2019 from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton.
